Baolong Industrial Centre, Worker's Dome

Time: 2003 Location: Longgang ,Shenzhen Size: 14,0000 sqm

Manufacturing workers' living conditions haven't been paid enough attention since a long time ago. NO one since has ever questioned the way they live in simple mundane row dormitories. Our design starts from a careful study of this condition, and we show a strong sense of care for the workers from the master planning to the design of individual living cell.

All the buildings ground floors are left open to allow unlimited expansion of the city surface. Walking along the streets bordering the dormitory complex, one can easily get to the central green space through a carefully designed landscape system. Unexpectedly one can also walk into a courtyard, or another interlocked courtyard to the next……which interprets the experience of the Chinese courtyard space. That the site property belongs to several owners shows their own identity and overall diversity.

The building does not anchor onto the ground, but either through interpenetmting, shifting, interlocking, separating on two different levels, shift positioning, or repetition of single motifs it establishes a relation ship with the street.

Single flights of stairs clime up and down at different levels along the building facades, which sculpt the surface of the building to allow the expectation and seduction to grow for urban events.

Overlapping and intertwining roof terraces are the best urban stages for all sorts of “encounter” and “drama”.

Entering each living cell, like well fit clothing, the comfortable scale shows care for the worker from bedroom to balcony, from restroom to the storage. Our intention is to solve problems, the result is that we create is the unlimited possibilities.
