Beijing Municipal Government has promised the world that Beijing will present an Olympics with the highest technological content of any in history in 2008. As the landmark building of the digital Olympics, the digital Beijing Building will be located in the northern end of the central axis, neighbouring the core area of the Olympics Centre, the National Stadium and National Swimming Center . There were seven internationally renowned design construction firms participating in the competition. Finally, the joint proposal of URBANUS Architecture and Design with China Institute of Building Standards Design and Research won and was designated as the proposal to be implemented.
The Digital Beijing Building will serve as the headquarters and the data center of Beijing Olympics, 2008. In the meantime, it will accommodate a virtual museum of Digital Olympics and an exhibition center for digital manufactures.
The design process of Digital Beijing was a course of reconsideration and reflection on contemporary architecture in the era of digital information.
The scheme of Digital Beijing, like digital bar code, or integrated circuit boards, emerges from the serene water surface. Here we are seeking a specific form, trying to reveal an enlarged micro world as in the microchips permeating but ignored in our daily life. With a most abstracted mass, like the simple repetition of the binary 0 and 1, this building will exhibit an impressive display of digital Olympics as well as the stenography of the information era. Digital Beijing is always under renovation, keeping pace with time.
