Shenzhen, a linear-shaped city, has been seen rapid growth in the past few decades. Simply by driving along one of its main arteries, such as Shennan Avenue, one can get a clear and sectional impression of the city’s urbanization achievements.

The Greater China  IFC is located along the south side of Shennan Avenue, on the east side of the city’s central district. It is surrounded by high-speed city avenues, and as such requires a recognizable landmark. The most important characteristic of this site is that it is long and narrow, occupying a whole block stretching some 300 meters. Such a scale for a site along Shennan Avenue and within the city center is quite unique.

Based on these site characteristics, the architects aimed to design a series of continuous buildings along the street, and to transform four individual buildings into a unified series that can be identified even in a fast-moving vehicle. Hotels, offices, business-apartments, and shopping areas are all integrated within the undulating and folding façade. In addition, this belt helps conceal the chaotic urbanism of a village in the city to the south. Only 24 meters deep, the base elegantly combines the dynamic businesses of the villages with retail space in the new buildings, thus injecting the vitality of the village to Shennan Avenue.
