The past 30 years of economic development in Shenzhen has reformed what was a fishing village into the current international metropolis it is now; the urbanization progress has expanded with enormous speed and impact. However, during the process of such expansion, there are considerable amounts of public urban spaces being neglected, most of which lack of efficient management and proper inhabited planning.

This project is sited at the intersection of Shennan Road and Wenjinzhong Road in Luohu district, Shenzhen. The periphery of the site lacks of consistent maintenance, and is currently dominated by shrubs and bushes, therefore the enclosed site became problematic in terms of security management and public access. The condition of the site provided an opportunities to re-evaluate  those left-behind public spaces. We intended to create an accessible public space. The priority of an urban environment is to enable the accessibility and sharing of land resources by different social groups.

In order to introduce the equality of accessibility to the site, the project aims at blurring the boundary of urban green spaces and public activity spaces, further allowing the site to become a medium between natural and artificial parts of the city. The strategy is to diminish rigid urban spatial organization, and to redefine open spaces to involve potential more public activities of everyday life. To reflect the fluidity of the concept, the design seeks for a relatively even and fluent landscape form, constructing a convenient public network with clear directional routes and circulation system based on the existing vegetation pattern on site. The south section is activated by properly maintained green public spaces, attracting public interactions through interesting spatial experiences such as various scales of resting platforms and enclosed squares.
