Located in the center of Futian District of Shenzhen, Chegongmiao was the clothing manufacturing zone in the era of the “three-plus-one” trading mix, and nowadays has become a thriving area for the Chinese Fashion Design Headquarters. As the Government of Futian intends to upgrade the fashion industry by purchasing the Tairan Licheng Building and transforming it into the Fashion Headquarter Center, the future of the whole area became a rising topic. How do we explore new potentials in the existing situation and experiment with new urban renewal modes? URBANUS focuses on the Tairan 9th and 4th Road Area, and tries to dig the cultural and historic treasure to rejuvenate the site. We envision this site as a city leisure belt and a cluster of fashion industry sharing spaces where diverse groups gather around and launch creative events. Meanwhile, we develop a new set of architectural typologies to take advantage of the underused air rights of the existing buildings without pulling down them, which could be a future urban renewal mode. We believe that Shenzhen, as a Pioneering Demonstration Zone, should think out of the box and become an international case of how to establish a cultural district with the avant-garde fashion industry and experimental urban design.
