As a successful case study of industrial transformation and on-site urbanization of urban villages, Dafen Village, Longgang has always been a mirror that reflects many aspects of Shenzhen. Between the ups and downs in the acceleration and stalling of globalization, top-down and bottom-up wrestling, the oil painting village, which is constantly advancing in exploration, has been lingering in its bottleneck area for many years. Nowadays in the Shenzhen’s “post- urban village” development, Dafen Village is facing a new round of upgrading and transformation in order to adapt to the new requirements of urban development. URBANUS has been involved in the research of Dafen Village and other Shenzhen urban villages in 2004-05, published the research monograph “Village / City, City / Village” in 2006, designed and built the first urban village art gallery for Dafen Village in 2007, brought the self-renewal mode of Dafen Village to the World Expo Shanghai as an urban practice case study in 2010. Then in the next 10 years, although URBANUS did not participate in, it has been paying attention to the fate of evolution trajectory of Dafen Village. Currently we are restarting a new round of research and practice, hoping to update our overall understanding of Dafen Village, and once again intervene in Dafen Village by mobilizing local artists more extensively, linking communities and local residents more widely for promotion  of public space and integration of urban life.
