ABSTRACT This article summarizes three contemporary “preservation” modes of courtyards in Beijing’s Hutong. Based on the renovation project of a courtyard that is overlooking the White Pagoda in Miaoying Temple, it tries to recap the strategies adopted in a dilemma situation that could be used as future references for similar projects.
