Transformation of Fuxin Village, Shenzhen
Fuxin Village is a small “village–amidst-the-city” surrounded by one of Shenzhen’s vast urban parks. Our proposal is to connect existing buildings with variously proportioned passage rings as a way to reinforce the structure of the village. These rings, like hidden subway lines, travel at different levels throughout the blocks, connecting public spaces planted within each individual building. New “mixing buildings” containing the maximum number of programs are designed at three strategic points in the village where the rings intersect. Additions of public amenities on the roof allow for emergence of a dynamic and inter-connected public realm. Here varied strategies are used to create a variety of spatial situations responding to the particularities of the village site and to each individual program, as a way of reinventing the village as an attractive and unique urban community in the midst of the city.
